A product description is the only salesperson in the room when a customer stands in front of your product online. They can't touch the fabric or try the device, so they rely on what you write. At the same time, that text is the most important thing Google reads to understand the page and decide when to show it. A good description serves both.

The most common mistake: copying the supplier's text

When you paste the description your supplier sent, you publish the same text that appears on dozens of other stores. Google has no reason to rank your page above theirs, and the customer finds nothing that sets you apart. An original description, even a short one, beats a long copied one.

Start with the customer, not the product

Before writing, ask: who buys this product? What problem does it solve for them? What worries them before buying? "100% cotton" is a spec. "Light cotton that stays comfortable through a Riyadh summer" is a benefit the customer understands and feels. Turn every important spec into a clear benefit.

A suggested description structure

  • Opening line: what the product is, who it's for, and its key differentiator, in one or two sentences.
  • Benefits: three to five short bullet points that are easy to scan on mobile.
  • Specifications: a table or list of dimensions, materials, sizes and warranty.
  • Answering concerns: shipping, returns, care instructions, how to use.

Use keywords naturally

Put the product name the way customers search for it in the page title and the first sentence of the description, then use close variations and synonyms naturally: "wireless earbuds" and "Bluetooth earbuds". Don't repeat a keyword artificially. Google understands meaning, and customers are put off by keyword-stuffed copy.

Page title and meta description

The page title is the first thing a searcher sees in Google results. Include the product name, its key attribute and your store name, in roughly sixty characters. The meta description is your free ad in search results: one sentence with the benefit and a hook like "free shipping" or "delivered in two days" that earns the click.

Similar products

If you sell a product in ten colors, don't write ten identical descriptions on ten pages. Make it one product with color options on a single page, or if each color needs its own page for marketing reasons, use a canonical tag pointing to the main page. We explain this in detail in our ecommerce SEO guide.

Don't forget reviews and questions

Customer reviews and questions are original content that refreshes itself, answers questions you never thought of, and builds trust with new visitors. Make them easy to submit, and include the average rating in your structured data so star ratings appear in search results.

The bottom line

A winning product description is original, speaks the customer's language, turns specs into benefits, and places keywords where they naturally belong. When the store itself is built with flexible SEO fields for every product, applying all of this from the admin panel is easy. That is what we deliver with our ecommerce store design with SEO service.
